It’s Fall, Y’all!!!!

For so many of my yarny friends, fall is the BEST. It’s the start of cozy season and all the wooly and snuggly sweaters, hats, and mittens. I love seeing my friends’ new projects and gorgeous WIPs for this season, but I often think…..yea…..I’d sweat my balls off wearing that during “Florida fall”. Many knit and crochet patterns just aren’t appropriate for my geographical location and climate or they are adorned with beautiful snow flakes, Evergreen pines, and all the gorgeous fall colors. I LOVE these gorgeous designs, but my hands and heart will always gravitate toward lighter fibers and tropical colors.

I figured that I can’t be the only beachy babe out there, so I’ve put together a little list of fall patterns for people like me! Whether you’re looking for something a little more light-weight that can be still made in gorgeous fall color shades or you’re dreaming of a tropical vacation while shivering in colder temperatures, these patterns will bring the heat.

Here are my 9 Autumnal Knit and Crochet Patterns For Tropic Lovers. (Links for patterns and IG profiles in each description title).

KNIT

  1. The Bethany Crop by Alexa of Essence of Knittany- This gorgeous cropped sweater popped up on my Instagram feed a few months ago and it stopped me scrolling in my tracks. Alexa was frolicking in the waves of the ocean and I immediately saved it to my “Patterns to Make” list. I love the exposed seams of this sweater and its simple “toss it on and go” vibe. I think this would be a great sweater in any fiber, but I definitely envision it in soft Pima Cotton in colors inspired by the sea.

  2. Pink Sky at Night Shawl by Margaret of Whimsy North- I recently learned brioche and have been plotting my next brioche project. I subscribe to Margeret’s email list and when this pattern announcement arrived in my inbox, I started planning yarn colors. I adore the bright flamingo pink fingering yarn she used in her sample and the waves of brioche stitches are just mesmerizing. I could easily see wearing this during chilly Florida evenings but also as a beautiful cozy layer over a sweater with boots and jeans for my friends up north (I’m thinking mohair could be really cool in this one). And y’all….did I mention….this is a FREE PATTERN!!!!

  3. Flamingo Dream Mittens by Lotta of Knittinglotta - While I may not need mittens here in the land of palm fronds, I can almost assure you that these will be on my needles at some point in the near future. Flamingos!!! Palm Trees! Pineapples!! These have my name written all over them. These vibrant mitts would make a great gift for any warm weather lover. I might just make them for traveling back to Pittsburgh in the fall/winter. As I freeze my tits off, at least my hands will be giving off sunny, beachy vibes.

  4. The Salem Slouch by Sonna of Sun Daughter Knits- Beach or mountains, palm trees or falling leaves, when autumn comes I definitely get in the witchy mood. Sonna has created the COOLEST witchy knit hat to wear for All Hallow’s Eve or anytime of the at all (check out her cute Seasons of the Witch Reel). I tested this pattern and it is super quick and super fun. You can see my Beach Witch version which I will proudly wear all Fall long.

  5. The Sanderson Sweater by Michael Shawn- Oh look! Another glorious morning. Makes me SICK!!!!!!! I have loved the Sanderson Sisters and all things Hocus Pocus since I was little. When Michael started teasing this pattern, I absolutely knew I was making one with Sarah (my boozy, slutty, witchy patronus) featuring prominently in the design. Michale put SO much thought into this design and there are about 30 different ways to customize it. Not into the Sisters??? Totally ok! Michael has charts upon charts of different Halloween and fall images that you can substitute on your sweater. And the fit options? Cropped/full length, split cuffs/ribbed cuffs, hoodie/pullover, the choices go on. Michael will be releasing this pattern 10/16/20 and hosting a KAL with this sweater soon so make sure you follow along with him. And be sure to keep an eye out for my cotton and cropped Sanderson Sweater (I’m still WIPping along with this one!).

CROCHET

  1. Cleo Fedora Sun Hat by Jess of Make and Do Crew - While I may not participate in a lot of fall fashion trends like boots, tights, and plaid scarves (flip flops + sunglasses for liiiiiiife), I do love these looks, especially when paired with a fedora. Make and Do Crew’s Cleo Fedora is a great transitional piece because it looks equally stylish in the summer and in the fall. If you check out Jess’s Instagram, you can see how she pairs her straw and sand colored Cleos with shorts and tanks for summertime and swaps to fall colored hues of green and gray for Cleos with jeans, sweaters, and boots. I plan on making one of these for my trip home this Thanksgiving (I do actually own a few pairs of jeans and boots) and I know I’ll still be able to rock it on the beach when I return. Oh and this pattern is FREE, Y’ALL!!!!

  2. Savannah Summer Shawl by Brit of Knot Bad Britt - I’m so excited to say that this is one of my current WIPs this fall!!!!! The Savannah Summer Shawl has been sitting in my queue on Rav for a few months now and I thought that the 2020 BIPOC MAL (happening now! Click here for details and to join!) would be an awesome time to WIP up this shawl by a BIPOC designer I really admire. Britt’s version looks gorgeous in pretty pinks and purples and while I did think about switching things up and making this shawl in fall colors, I decided to stay true to my heart and go for tropical turquoise and coral. I’m using cotton yarn to keep things light and airy, but you can use any worsted yarn to turn this into a cozy fall wrap.

  3. Cozy Home Throw by Yessenia of Seniya Studios - It doesn’t matter where you live, a cozy blanket is a MUST HAVE in every home. Movie night just isn’t right without a good snuggle under your favorite blanket. I have been in the market for a good sofa throw blanket pattern but hadn’t quite found THE ONE until I saw Seniya post this design. I like that it’s chunky and cozy while still being airy and drapey. I’ll be making mine in muted ocean colors (deep blues, grays, and sands- like a storm on the beach) to match my driftwood and beach themed living room. Pattern coming soon!!!

  4. The Tango Wrap by Natalie of Detroit Knots - Ooooooh the sexxxxxy vibes of this top!!!!! Somehow (damn IG algorithm), I didn’t see Natalie’s first few posts with this stunning top. Instead, I stumbled across photos of her testers modeling their versions and I was hitting that like button SO HARD. I adore how this top looks on ALL THE BEAUTIFUL BODIES!!!! Natalie did an amazing job creating a garment that is flattering and sexy on all body types and you can totally see the confidence on each tester’s face in the pics. This top will be great for Florida weather, but I think it would also be HAWT worn under a leather jacket or made in merino with a lacy, silk cami underneath. Ya know, perfect for fall apple picking or pumpkin patching or whatever the hell y’all do up north. If you’re down to make it in Truboo, this design is also available as a kit from Lion Brand !

  5. Baby Frida by Martis of Martini Martis - September 15 - October 15 is Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month in the US!!!! I love all of Martis’s adorable amigurumi and plushie designs, but her baby Frida really knocked my socks off. Frida Kahlo has always been one of my favorite, badass, feminist icons. Bold, bisexual, fierce, and unapologetically weird (at least for the time), her paintings depicted real life, pain, and the taboo struggles so many women endure. I will definitely be making a Baby Frida to keep in my home and remind me to be strong and unapologetically ME.

There ya have it y’all!!! I hope you enjoy my little rundown of non-traditional autumnal patterns. If there’s one you particularly love, let me know by sending me an email , or tag me on Instagram if you decide to make one of these amazing patterns.

Happy Fall, Y’all!
