Granny Scare A Thon - Granny Square Tutorials
Oh hey Y’all!!!
We are just a few days away from the start of the Granny Scare A Thon!!!
If you missed what the Granny Scare A Thon is or you’re still looking for some project/design inspo, check out my previous blog post with my granny square pattern roundup! There are 15 badass granny square projects of all sizes and for all crochet levels so you’re sure to find something that sparks your fancy.
Now, let’s get to the squares themselves. How the heck do we make them? Well, I truly considered creating my own tutorial for y’all, but as I perused the interwebz, I found that there are already some AMAZING beginner tutorials out there!!! Why reinvent the wheel, right? Work smarter, not harder and all that jazz ;) SOOOO I’m going to share with you 3 great beginner friendly tutorials for the classic granny square, as well as some links to other types of granny squares that I think would be awesome to use for the Thon.
The Classic Granny Square
Here are a few absolute begginer tutorials for the classic granny square for all my newbie crocheters.
Bella Coco Crochet - I have used many tutorials from Bella Coco Crochet and I find this tutorial to be super clear and easy to follow with time stamp suggestions and a nice slow pace. She does use UK crochet terminology but does a great job of explaining the differences between the US and UK terms.
TLYarn Crafts - Tony is an amazing teacher and gives a nice, slow tutorial on how to make the classic granny. It’s great for beginners and uses US terminology. If you explore on her page, she has a plethora of crochet tutorials and especially tips and tricks for granny square making.
Moogly Blog - Tamara of Moogly Blog is one of my go-to sources for video tutorials when I’m stumped or need a refresher in crochet. This tutorial is MUCH shorter than the others, but still great and to the point. If you have some crochet experience and just need a refresher on the granny square, this might be a great tutorial for you.
Other Granny Square Designs
Here are just a few tutorials to some other cool granny squares that you can use for your Thon projects.
Nautikrall Crochet - The Sunburst Granny Square is a beautiful, technically round, cheerful and puffy granny square option. Don’t worry if your project calls for a square and not a circle. This tutorial will also teach you how to crochet a square around the sunburst to use in blankets and other projects.
Bella Coco Crochet - The Solid Granny Square is a great spin off of the traditional granny square for when you need more coverage or a less airy design. This tutorial uses UK crochet terminology.
Polly Plum - The Queenie Square from Polly Plum is a truly epic granny square block. It would look awesome as part of a blanket, bag, or sweater.
Lost In Crochet - The Candy Dream Square is such a fun and playful square! I love that it looks like little candy sprinkles :) There is no video tutorial for this square, but the link will take you to Ravelry where the pattern is available to purchase.
Alyssia Creates - I am obsessed with these Sun and Moon Granny Squares by Alyssia Creates. As you can see, they are perfect for trinket bags, backpacks, and zippered pouches, but I think it would make a rad celestial blanket or duster too! There is no video tutorial for these squares but the link will take you to Ravelry where the pattern is available for purchase.
Just The Worsted - I had to throw in a spooky granny square tutorial!!! This eyeball granny square is so cute and fun for Halloween and Lindsey also has patterns for both a cardigan and sweater using this square.
I hope you found a granny square that you love for the Granny Scare A Thon!!! There are so many amazing squares out there to choose from, I just wanted to give y’all a little taste of what could be ;) I’ll be using the traditional granny square for my Scare A Thon dress I’m designing. I have some ideas for the overall shape of the dress and how I’m going to join the squares together that I’ll be sharing on IG throughout the Thon.
See y’all on Instagram on Monday, September 19th for the start of the Granny Scare A Thon!!!!
