The Revised Hangover Scrunchie

Hola muchachos!!!

So.  I have a lot of hair.  I mean, A LOT of hair.  It's incredibly thick, very long (that's what she said!) and quite rambunctious.  Hairdressers have stared in horror as I sat down in their chairs.  Back in the day when I used to color my hair, it took about 3-4 times the "normal" dye amount and I was out anywhere between $200-$300.  I therefore must always have at least one, if not two hair ties on me at all times.  And I don't know about you, but the scrunchie has long been one of my favorites.

ALL the hair.

I used to have a velvet purple scrunchie from Limited Too that I used all through high school and well into college to keep my hair back while putting on makeup, doing homework, sleeping on a hot night, etc.  It was SO soft, it didn't dent your hair, it felt nice on your wrist to wear around, and you could sleep in it with no tugging or pulling on the scalp.  And for those of you thinking I'm waxing just a bit too poetic about a scrunchie, you either have no soul or you have never been hungover.  Yes, my scrunchie also worked WONDERS on those most awfulest of awful mornings (you know the ones) when I was being punished for the previous night's tomfoolery.  My scrunchie saved the day in so many ways.  But it wasn't exactly what you'd call, "cute".  I wore it at home, in my dorm, and nowhere else.  I mean, it was neon purple, stained, and slightly ratty looking.  But man, oh man, did I love that scrunchie.

You can't even imagine how happy I am that scrunchies have made a come back. I knew immediately I wanted to make my own scrunchie design. And I'm sure you're thinking, "There are a ton of scrunchie patterns out there, why add one more?" Because I can that's why!!!! I'm adding mine to the list because you can never have too many scrunchies. Plus, it's a free pattern. Why are you complaining? ;) So in honor of my beloved purple scrunchie and all the assistance it gave to me, I have named this pattern, "THE HANGOVER SCRUNCHIE".

The Hangover Scrunchie is simple, cute, and FAST to make! I can whip these babies up in about 15 minutes. And, you don't need to crochet it perfectly to have a beautiful scrunchie! It embodies all the things I loved about my old scrunchie while being chic and modern.  You can party hard, throw your hair up and not throw-up on your hair, and pull together a hairstyle for brunch the next day that says, "Hangover?  I don't know her."

This scrunchie should be made with your favorite velvet yarn (I like Bernat's Velvet).  Now, the velvet yarn and the sheer number of stitches we'll be cramming onto the hair tie can make it a wee bit difficult to see your stitches.  NOT TO WORRY!!!!  You don't really need to perfectly count your stitches for this pattern.  We will be working in clusters and going off what "looks good".  So grab your hook, a glass of wine (or whatever you plan to get drunk on), and join me as we craft our Hangover Scrunchie.

You'll need:

1 skein of velvet yarn in the color of your choice.

The necessities.

A crochet hook (I use my trusty 4.00M G hook, but I'm a loose crocheter. I'd recommend an H hook if you don't crochet loosely like me.)

A hair tie

A yarn needle for weaving in your ends.

A pair of scissors

Create a slip knot on your hook.  Grab your hair tie and insert your hook into the center of the tie, grab the yarn and pull it back through center and complete a single crochet. Continue to single crochet around the hair tie.  I was able to get approximately 60-65 single crochets on by scrunching the yarn down slightly as I went (every ten stitches or so- scrunch it down).  You want it to be pretty fluffy so that the tie doesn't peek through when it's stretched out.  Slip stitch into your first stitch.  (This yarn can be tricky to see.  It may have been the first stitch or the second I slipped into.  Doesn't matter.  Trust me.)  This is round 1.

Round 2- You are going to work in clusters of 3 and 4 DC stitches. You do NOT want to crochet into each single crochet from the previous round. You just want the clusters to be nice and close together. Unlike in other areas of life, it doesn't quite matter which hole you go into (amirightladies?). So, Ch 2, *DC3 into 1 stitch, then DC4 into the next stitch.* Repeat this approximately 20-25 times until you have come round to your first double crochet (again, don't be concerned if you aren't certain all 4 stitches went into the same SC. Maybe 2 went in and 2 DC went into the next stitch. Oh well! Keep moving!). Slip stitch into the top of the 1st double crochet stitch. And that's it. Seriously folks.

Finishing-  Tie off, weave in your ends, and you're done!!!!  Wear your scrunchie in both sobriety and inebriation my friend, you earned it!
