Thicc Santa Hat Pattern

Thicc Santa Hat, Baby

Thicc Santa Hat, Baby

Just like the jolly ol' plump man himself, this Santa hat is THICC. If you've got 2-3 hours and the Christmas spirit, you can whip up my cozy version of Santa's sombrero.

I first made this hat in 2016 when I couldn't find a Santa hat pattern big and festive enough for my desires. I ended up trying my own thing and worked up a large and in charge (slightly too big and loose) Santa hat. I LOVED IT. And I've worn it every Christmas since.

Big, chunky, fur ballz

This year, so many of you asked me for the pattern that I decided to re-work the hat for a better fit and offer it up for you as a freebie! Merry Christmas!!!

PLEASE contact me if you have questions or issues (or comments!), you spot an error, you have a suggestion, etc., because I really want you to love this hat as much as I do. This pattern is also available FOR FREE on Ravelry.

So without further ado, here's what you'll need to make your Thicc Santa Hat.

The Thicc Santa Hat

The Thicc Santa Hat is knit in the round and then decreased along both sides of the BOR marker to create a neat seam up the length of the back of the hat. You will hold yarn double for the entirety of the hat to give it extra thicc-ness ;)

Materials:

~2 skeins of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Cranberry

~1 skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Fisherman (you'll need to make 2 balls to knit double or knit from inner and outer strands)

~1 set of size US 13 needles (or size needed to obtain gauge- I'm a loose knitter) on at least 32" cable (if doing magic loop). You may use 16" cable and DPNs if preferred.

~Stitch marker

~Yarn needle

~Measuring Tape

~Pom Pom maker (or carboard to make your pom).

Gauge : 8 stitches x 13 rows in stockinette in the round = 4"

Make sure to swatch in the round

Measurements:

21" long from base of hat to top (without pom).

11" wide across base.

Abbreviations:

St - Stitch or Stitches

k- knit

p- purl

k2tog- Knit 2 stitches together

*ssk- Slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 purlwise, knit together through the back loop (Slipping the second stitch purlwise helps the stitch lay flatter and gives the seam a neater appearance, I think).

BOR- Beginning of round

Pattern Instructions:

Cast on 44 stitches with Fisherman color yarn held double. If using magic loop (my favorite method), separate 22 stitches on each needle.

Join in the round, taking care not to twist stitches. Place marker at BOR.

Work in k2, p2 ribbing for 8 rounds total.

Cut yarn. Change to Cranberry yarn (held double).

Work in stockinette st (k all sts) for 12 rounds total.

Now we will begin the decreases. Switch to DPNs if/when necessary.

Round 13- k2tog, k until 2 st remain, ssk

Round 14-15 k all

Repeat rounds 13-15 3 more times (4 times total)

Round 25- k2tog, k until 2 st remain, ssk

Round 26- k all

Repeat rounds 25-26 a total of 14 times. You will end on round 54 with 6 sts.

Cut yarn with a long tail. Thread your needle and pull yarn through all sts. Remove needles and pull tight to cinch.

Weave in ends of hat on wrong side.

I like big Poms. And as my face shows, I cannot lie.

Now that you have your thicc hat, you need a thicc pom. I suggest using a large pom pom maker and winding it full of the fisherman yarn. Leave a long tail on your pom and sew it onto the end of the hat.

Voilaaaaaaa! You're done!!!! Now put on your hat and grab a cocktail! It's time to make merry!!!

I'd love it if you'd tag me in your pics @knittingtipsy and use the hashtag #thiccsantahat so I can see how you get your jollies on ;)

If you have any questions or issues, please let me know!

Feliz Navidad, amigos!!!
